- AD : Alzheimer's Disease
- AD : Attachment Disorder
- ADD : Attention Deficit Disorder. Now replaced by AD/HD
- AD/HD : The DSM-IV eliminated the diagnosis of ADD and replaced it with AD/HD (for Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder). The specifiers for subtypes for this disorder are Predominantly Inattentive, Predominantly Hyperactive or Combined..
- ADD-RT : ADD that lasts into Adulthood is referred to as ADD-RT (Residual Type).
- AHC : Alternating Hemiplegia of Childhood
- AIDS : Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome
- ALS : Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis
- AS : Anklyosing Spondylitis
- AS : Asperger's Syndrome (part of the autism spectrum)
- BEH : Behaviorally/Emotionally Handicapped
- BH : Behaviorally Handicapped
- CAPD : Central Auditory Processing Disorder
- CCD : Considerable Conduct Disorder
- CCHS : Congenital Central Hypoventilation Syndrome
- CDGS : Carbohydrate Deficient Glycoprotein Syndrome
- CF : Cystic Fibrosis
- CFIDS : Chronic Fatigue Immune Dysfunction Syndrome
- CFS : Chronic fatigue syndrome
- CHARGE : Coloboma, Heart, Atresia of the choanae, Retarded growth & or development, Genital, Ears
- CHD : Congenital Heart Disease.
- CHD : Congenital Hip Dysplasia
- CMV : Cytomegalovirus Infection
- CP : Cerebral Palsy
- DAS : Developmental Apraxia of Speech
- DD : Developmentally Delayed
- DEF : Deaf
- DH : Developmentally Handicapped (used in some areas instead of DD)

- DVD : Developmental Verbal Dyspraxia
- ED : Emotionally Disturbed
- EDS : Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome
- EMH : Educable Mentally Handicapped

- LKS : Landau-Kleffler Syndrome - a form of aphasia with seizure-like activity
- LP : Little Person/People (Dwarfism)
- LPA : Little People of America
- MBD : Minimal brain dysfunction (another name AD(H)D has been known by)
- MCS : Multiple Chemical Sensitivities
- MD : Muscular dystrophy
- MIDD or MC : middle child (late deafened or hard of hearing AFTER spending life as hearing)
- MS : Multiple Sclerosis
- MSDD : Multi-Sensory Developmental Delays
- NAS : Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome - a term for babies who are born either addicted to or affected by drugs
- NDA : No Diagnosis of Anything
- NLD : Nonverbal Learning Disability
- NTD : Neural Tube Defect
- OCD : Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder
- ODD : Oppositional Defiant Disorder
- OMA : Ocular Motor Apraxia
- PDD : Pervasive Developmental Disorder
- PDD/NOS : Pervasive Developmental Disorder, Not Otherwise Specified
- PPS : Post-Polio Syndrome.
- PVL : PeriVentricular Leukomalacia
- PW : Port-Wine Stain
- RA : Rheumatoid Arthritis
- RAD : Reactive Attachment Disorder
- RSD : Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (a trauma induced neurological condition of autonomic nervous system - extremely disabling)
- ROP : Retinopathy of Prematurity. A condition in which blood vessels which should grow across the back of the eye actually grow forward.
- SBS : Shaken Baby Syndrome - also referred to as SIS
- SID : Sensory Integrative (or Integration) Dysfunction
- SIDS : Sudden Infant Death Syndrome
- SIS : Shaken Infant Syndrome - also referred to as SBS
- SMA : Spinal Muscular Atrophy
- SMS : Smith-Magenis Syndrome
- SWS : Sturge-Weber Syndrome
- TCS : Tethered Cord Syndrome
