The following serious of images and text describes the process that John goes through as he creates his Raku Tidal Plates. You can select on each image below to see a larger more detailed version of that image.
1) Cool pre-glazed Tidal plates waiting to be placed in the kiln.
2) Placing cold Tidal plate in hot kiln. Turn on the burner, within 20 minutes the kiln temperature is 1825* to 1850* degrees.
3) Picking up fired pot @1850* from the kiln with a pair of tongs.
4) Removing plate from kiln.
5) Waving hot plate in wind for a few minutes to aid in color development.
6) Placing hot plate in reduction container, which is filled with hay - it of course catches fire.
7) Placing lid filled with more hay on the container and stopping oxygen from entering.
8) After 10 to 20 minutes remove plate from reduction container.
9) Spraying water on the hot plate, after removal from reduction container.
Finished Tidal Plate.
